    Description :    International Steering Committee for Global Mapping - The Global Mapping project. After registration, you may download layered vector and raster data for many countries. The data is in a proprietary format (Vector data in VPF format; Raster data in Band Interleaved (BIL) format). This may sound confusing but the Global Mapper software can read the downloaded zip file!

  Contours - The NASA Database

    Description :    NASA's database of contour data for the entire world! This is an FTP server so it can be awkward to figure out, but once you have, it is an invaluable source of contour data for most of the inhabited world.
    Type :    A free source of contour data in a (semi)useable format. For a quick introduction into contour conversions and how to use them in mapping, you may wish to review Rotweiler's Guide to Converting Contours.
