How to send maps to your Garmin GPSr using BaseCamp

Please note that the process below is specifically for the PC. While it is very similar in BaseCamp for the Mac, the terminology is slightly different. Click here for a summary of the process for a Mac.

The following will assist you to transfer a map to your GPSr using BaseCamp. It is similar to MapSource, but maps are sent to the Garmin GPSr a little differently.

Here are the basic steps for sending maps to your Garmin GPSr using BaseCamp. You must have your GPSr connected to the computer and turned on before you will have the option to Transfer to your GPS.

Remember that it WILL over-write whatever maps are already on the device you send the map to - either the removable memory card or the Garmin's base memory, so if there is a map there already that you do not wish deleted, make sure you keep a backup of it. We strongly recommend using a removable memory card.

#1: Connect your GPS to your computer.

  #2: Start the BaseCamp program

#3: With your GPSr connected and turned on, BaseCamp will recognize your Garmin GPSr and display it's information in the left hand part of your screen under 'Devices'

If you have an SD/microSD memory card in your GPSr, this will also be displayed under 'Devices' either as 'Memory Card' or 'Removable Media'.

You can transfer the map to either your GPSr's internal memory or to the external Memory Card (Removable Media). We strongly recommend transferring the map to the external Memory Card / Removable Media because of limitations on the internal memory of the Garmin GPSr.

#4: To transfer the map to the Memory Card / Removable Media, right click on the 'Memory Card' or it's 'All Data' Folder under 'Devices' on the left side of the screen.

After right-clicking a menu window will pop up, select 'Install Maps' from the menu.

#5: A MapInstall Wizard Window will pop-up, select Next.

If it asks if you would like to automatically detect locations of your user data, say 'No' unless you understand this process and would like the MapInstall Wizard to do this for you.

#6:The next window will show the map you have selected. To select a different map or additional maps to send to your GPSr at the same time, change to a different map product using the drop down menu in the bottom part of the window.

#7: To select the map or portion of map you wish to upload to your GPSr, simply click the map - it will change color to pink. To select additional maps to send to your GPSr at the same time, change to a different map product using the drop down menu in the bottom part of the window, and click on it as well - again, it will change color to pink.

#8: Now select 'Finish' to send the map or maps to your Garmin GPSr.

Transferring the selected map to your Garmin GPSr will take a few seconds and when it is complete you can disconnect your Garmin GPSr and use the map.
